Terminal 2 & Dulux Paints Ireland

A small Island in a big ocean, Painted by Dulux

It all began at 9:00am on a cold Thursday in January 1940 when Dublin Airport was officially opened with the departure on January 19th of an Aer Lingus Lockheed 14 aircraft bound for Liverpool. In 1940, Collinstown Airport, as it was known then, had just one flight a day to Liverpool.

Today, just over 248 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport since that first flight took off in 1940.

"Designed with the passenger in mind, T2 has been planned and built for the long-term," according to Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) Chairman David Dilger. "The new terminal is the centrepiece of a five-year investment programme to expand, improve and upgrade Dublin Airport. Our passengers told us that they wanted better facilities and we have delivered them." Dulux Paints are delighted to have been part of the project and indeed the interior coating of choice.

Terminal 2 Dublin Airport

The €1.2 billion Transforming Dublin Airport investment programme has been the primary vehicle in the upgrading and modernising of facilities on the airport campus from 2006 to 2010.

Terminal 2 officially opened on November 19, 2010. Airlines that operate from Terminal 2 include Aer Lingus, Ethiad Airways, Continental (United), US Airways, American Airlines and Delta Airlines.

These new facilities allow Dublin Airport to comfortably handle up to 35 million passengers per year and create a vibrant modern airport and efficient gateway for Ireland. With its steel and glass facade, the new terminal makes use of natural light to create a modern and comfortable space for both departing and arriving passengers.

The new 75,000 sq metre terminal at Dublin Airport, Terminal 2, cost €395 million to construct and is capable of handling up to 15 million passengers per year. The terminal is designed to meet the needs of both long-haul and short-haul passengers and airlines. The three storey terminal building has been designed with bright spaces in areas where passengers dwell such as check-in, baggage reclaim, security and the departures lounge.

The new Pier E has been constructed perpendicular to the new terminal - boarding gates 401-426 - and has parking for up to 19 aircraft.

The overall T2 project includes an improved internal campus roads network at Dublin Airport, a major utilities upgrade, a new multi-storey car park and the provision of sites for a new ground transportation centre and a future metro station.

Dulux paints offer the highest quality products delivering a variety of best in class properties, such as durability, coverage or spreading rate. As a result was chosen as the interior coatings for Terminal 2. Specialising in high performance, Dulux delivered on application, quality, opacity, seamless finish and durability for the Terminal. Pascall+Watson describe Terminal 2 as being "specifically designed with the travelers needs in mind..a visually striking building makes maximum use of daylight, creating bright and airy spaces that are both calm and relaxing." Dulux Matt Emulsion was chosen in pure brilliant white in line with the minimalist, modern tone created by the curves and building structure design. The paint choice was chosen to reinforce and build on the clean lines and bright airy spaces.

Terminal 2 provides an iconic gateway to Ireland and has been awarded the CMG Building Design Awards Public Building of the year as voted by the public and indeed has been awarded the Corus Structural Steel Design Award. Dulux is delighted to have been part of the interior finish of the building.

The total cost of the project was just over €600 million.
